Breaking the Cycle: Fighting Period Poverty One Kit at a Time

The Monthlies Project "Regs" packing 2025 summer kits for local schools and organizationsThe second week of May marks Period Poverty Awareness Week, a national effort to shine a light on an issue that too often goes unseen — and unspoken.

This summer, The Monthlies Project will distribute 2,000 summer kits across Northeast Wisconsin to over 48 schools and organizations serving school aged menstruators across 11 districts. Each drawstring bag includes one package of liners, pads, tampons, and a note of encouragement — reminders that someone cares, and that no one is alone in this struggle.

While schools supported by The Monthlies Project provide access to period products during the academic year, that access disappears once summer break begins. For many students, especially those who rely on these products from their schools, this creates a significant gap in essential care. The summer kits will help ensure that school-age menstruators can manage their periods with dignity and confidence throughout the summer months — without having to miss out on camps, jobs, or summer programs due to lack of supplies. These packs provide not just products, but peace of mind during a time when school-based support systems are unavailable.

Why Period Poverty Matters

Period poverty isn’t just about hygiene, it’s about equity. When people lack access to period products, it can lead to missed days of school, lost income, poor health outcomes, and a deep sense of isolation. The stigma surrounding menstruation only adds to the challenge, keeping far too many people from seeking help.

Here in the Fox Valley, we know the need is real — and growing. The Monthlies Project began as a response to that need and has now become a vital resource thanks to the generosity of donors, volunteers, and partners who believe in menstrual equity for all.

How You Can Help

Want to get involved? You can:

  • Donate period products or funds to support future distributions.
  • Host a period product drive in your workplace, school, or community group.
  • Spread awareness during Period Poverty Awareness Week, and beyond, by talking openly and advocating for access and dignity.

Together, we can end the stigma, close the gap, and ensure that having a period doesn’t mean falling behind. Thank you to everyone helping to carry this mission forward. And to the 2,000 young people who will receive a kit this summer: you matter, you are seen, and we are with you.
